ratcreature: RatCreature begs: Please? (please?)

If you would like to volunteer for fanart reccing (please do!), just comment here with the name of the fandom you want to rec as well the month if you can't just take the next free slot. If you volunteer to rec fanart for a fandom, you agree to post at least four fanart recs during your month.

Once you commented to volunteer, a moderator will reply to confirm, and add you to the list of fandoms and volunteers that is also kept here to keep track, so everyone can see which fandoms have volunteers, and which don't.

You also have to join the community so that you can get posting access during your month. For information on how to format your recs, please take a look at the Intro Post, which has a convenient template.

ETA (Apr. 2016): I've cleaned up the list and removed the pre-2016 entries for more clarity, but left the fandoms that previously had reccers as subsection titles. Of course all fandoms are options for rec sets, not just those already listed.

It's time for our regular reccer recruiting post, and to look ahead to the next month. So far we have ONE volunteer reccer who signed up for October with this fandom:

* Tolkien ([personal profile] turlough)

So while we already have some recs to look forward to in October, it would of course be awesome if we had more recs. There is still plenty of opportunity for you to jump in and volunteer to rec next month (or to convince your friends to do some reccing). And many cheers for all of our members who volunteer to rec, especially if you rec regularly. Your valiant repeat efforts keep the comm alive.

Looking even further ahead so far NO reccers have volunteered for November, so that month definitely still needs some love (and recs! *g*) too. So please consider reccing in a fandom of your choice, whether small or huge, and comment on the sign-up post and volunteer for October, November or even further ahead if you are so well organized, that you know your fannish interests and time commitments in advance. It's only four recs as a minimum, and you can rec any genre or rating. Or promote us to your friends or in your favorite communities so others do the work.

Open Rec Posting

The monthly open reccing period for all members starts now and lasts until the end of September. If you are looking for something to inspire you, the prompt for this week is "space opera", but that's totally optional for the recs. However they do still have to conform to the usual rec format and follow the rules for what is allowed to be recced here.

(Comments here are disabled, because I want to bundle volunteering in the sign-up post so that nothing gets lost, and you can see the list of claimed slots there too.)

Why this piece is awesome: This a brilliant illustration of the book done for an art school final project. It's probably the closest version of Shadow to my head-canon, and I love the style and the coloring and shading. Really breathtaking work.

Why this piece is awesome: This is a nice meet-cute AU 101 Dalmatians style. Love it!

Artist on DW/LJ: n/a
Artist Website/Gallery: On DA
Why this piece is awesome: a nicely dramatic work with great use of light and dark, and contrasting colours. I think the figures might be slightly influenced by the movie's casting, but that may be my imagination - I prefer a more native American-looking Shadow, but I still like the overall effect here. Love the typical small town America background.

Content Notes/Warnings: a bit of blood and black eye

Why this piece is awesome: Eggsy and Roxy are totally my BROTP! Here they are both in full Kingsman attire, post fight, and once again Roxy shows us that she's the tough one. I love how Eggsy is leaning on her, and the long-suffering smile she's directing at him.

Content Notes/Warnings: none
Medium: traditional art (ink on claybord)
Artist on DW/LJ: n/a
Artist Website/Gallery: Nicolas Delort's blog
Why this piece is awesome: This artist does the most AMAZING ink-work and has a penchant for skewing the angle of scenes for added drama (there's a name for that; I forget it canted angles or the Dutch tilt - but that's in film). This illustration is one he did, then developed into a larger, slightly less dramatic work which was entered in The Book Show (I'll link to both). See the notes in his blog around the initial work, re who the characters are. On either work, if you R-click to open the work in a new tab you can then enlarge to see the inking detail - which is incredible.

Why this piece is awesome: Their clothes - especially James' suit - are incredibly detailed, and they both look so fierce despite the amused expressions on their faces. Of course, they never even met - but I love it!

Why this piece is awesome:  I'm pretty excited about reccing American Gods art this month, as there's some extraordinary work out there. I'm also keen to get in before the movie, when most artists have used their imaginations and the book to envisage characters. This is an amazing piece - the detail's great, and it does manage to convey the confusing and mind-blowing overlaying for Shadow of the gods' mundane human avatars and their godly forms. Click through a few times to enlarge it - it's absolutely worth it.

Why this piece is awesome: This is so lovingly detailed, and all the little elements blend so easily into each other. The suit & armour, gun & swordm and the flowers. The gadgets, like the signet ring, the glasses and the brooch with the Kingsman "K". Beautiful colours, too!

Artist on DW/LJ: n/a
Artist Website/Gallery: lamorien on DA
Why this piece is awesome: I so admire anyone who's adept at watercolours, and this is a lovely piece, with a limited colour palette making it even more striking. Also interesting as the angel is loosely based on Cumberpatch who read the part in the BBC radio production recently. I like that it suggests him without being too exact. The use of white space is very effective as well.

Why this piece is awesome: I love this depiction of Illuin. The light is so gloriously bright and fresh and I love the way it glitters on the sea and lights up the trees and clouds. You can really imagine it illuminating the whole of Arda.

I missed the usual reminder post timing (where did August go?!) but there are still reccers needed for the next month. So far we have two volunteer reccers who signed up for September with these fandoms:

* American Gods ([personal profile] mific)
* Kingsman: The Secret Service ([personal profile] dancing_serpent)

So while we already have some recs to look forward to in September, it would of course be awesome if we had more recs. There is still plenty of opportunity for you to jump in and volunteer to rec next month (or to convince your friends to do some reccing). And many cheers for all of our members who volunteer to rec, especially if you rec regularly. Your valiant repeat efforts keep the comm alive.

Looking even further ahead so far NO reccers have volunteered for October, so that month definitely still needs some love (and recs! *g*) too. So please consider reccing in a fandom of your choice, whether small or huge, and comment on the sign-up post and volunteer for September, October or even further ahead if you are so well organized, that you know your fannish interests and time commitments in advance. It's only four recs as a minimum, and you can rec any genre or rating. Or promote us to your friends or in your favorite communities so others do the work.

No Open Rec period this month, because this post is so late, and few seem to use these anyway.

Why this piece is awesome: A gorgeous piece of papercut art, using coloured and patterned papers to amazing effect. I love all the tiny details, like the ribbons and Door's fingerless gloves and spotted sock! And the Marquis is suitably dashing - it's very cleverly done and absolutely captures them both.

Why this piece is awesome: This is such a beautiful work. The way Aule and Yavanna are depicted both as personifications of their respective elements and as people is very intriguing. And I love the myriad of details and the serenity of their faces.

Content Notes/Warnings: n/a
Medium: digital art

Why this piece is awesome: A beautiful work from one of my favourite Silmarillion artists. The colouring in this piece is not as bright and jewel-like as in many of the artist's other works. But to my eyes the more sombre palette adds to the gravity of the piece. The way the colours darken from the top towards the bottom also cleverly illustrates the progressive darkening of Numenor as can be seen in the various depicted scenes from its history.

Why this piece is awesome: Oof - apologies for the gap in posting more Neverwhere fanart, but RL's been hammering me with deadlines. Will fit the rest in before the end of August, promise!
