ratcreature: RatCreature begs: Please? (please?)
[personal profile] ratcreature
If you would like to volunteer for fanart reccing (please do!), just comment here with the name of the fandom you want to rec as well the month if you can't just take the next free slot. If you volunteer to rec fanart for a fandom, you agree to post at least four fanart recs during your month.

Once you commented to volunteer, a moderator will reply to confirm, and add you to the list of fandoms and volunteers that is also kept here to keep track, so everyone can see which fandoms have volunteers, and which don't.

You also have to join the community so that you can get posting access during your month. For information on how to format your recs, please take a look at the Intro Post, which has a convenient template.

ETA (Apr. 2016): I've cleaned up the list and removed the pre-2016 entries for more clarity, but left the fandoms that previously had reccers as subsection titles. Of course all fandoms are options for rec sets, not just those already listed.

Why this piece is awesome: it seems I'm on the quirky bandwagon this month. This is a beautifully illustrative piece, and I could easily see it in a version of the Sorcerer's Stone. It has lovely color palette that standout wonderfully against the dark background and strong but simple line work.

Content Notes/Warnings: n/a
Medium: digital art
Artist on DW/LJ: n/a
Artist Website/Gallery: [deviantart.com profile] breath-art

Why this piece is awesome: This is a little different to this artist's usual works. The composition is more informal and the dark background echoes Russian and Japanese laquer work rather than of Western Art Deco. It's a very striking piece in any case and I love the way it mirrors the combination of danger and humour present in the book.

Why this piece is awesome: I really like the strong, warm colours and the dramatic design with Temeraire poised on the battlements before flying. But what fascinates me most about this is that it brings home how weird the anatomy of dragons is - this type of dragon, anyway. This art, more than most, lets us see clearly that dragons are animals with two sets of front legs - the wings are clearly elongated limbs as in bats, and behind them are the forelegs. Some dragon art I've seen (not specific to any fandom I don't think) has only the wings and no forelegs, so the dragons walk on their elbows like pterodactyls. I think they're almost a bit humanoid and might tend to be more upright than 6-limbed dragons which tend to stand on 4 legs (here's an example). Six-limbed dragons as in Temeraire would move more elegantly on the ground, but they're less evolutionarily likely, in that we don't have any 6-limbed lizards, dinosaurs, birds or mammals (AFAIK anyway!). And of course this is fantasy, but still . . . interesting and in an artwork like this, it makes Temeraire more alien, I think.

Why this piece is awesome: Jaylah was a new, fantastic character in Star Trek Beyond. I loved her uncompromising nature, her strength and and her skills, and her sheer cheekiness. This art of Jaylah with a boombox shows both her grit and her playfulness.

Why this piece is awesome: This artist has such a distinctive style, tight and curvy and askew, almost surrealistic. At the same time there is just all this wonderful detail. Like the leaves in Hagrid's hair. I love the flat/muted colors, and the way they've left the sketch lines in the piece. I've recced this artist before, but they certainly earn a second rec.

Why this piece is awesome: I love the artist's loose, impressionistic style and muted pallets. I was a crusty old adult when I read the HP novels so I never had a crush on any of the characters and there has been some gorgeous artwork but until Blvnk's work, I never thought of Harry as sexy in general but wow! Aged Auror!Harry with a beard, wearied and intense is definitely yowza!
Please check out all her HP work. I really had a hard time deciding for, it's all so lovely(though I love the golden trio and the next gen piece as well).

Why this piece is awesome: This month I'm reccing art for the Temeraire books, because DRAGONS! I really like this work, with Laurence looking very dashing and windswept, and Temeraire so enormous and gentle. The size contrast and muted, near-monochrome colours really work - and the claws! The early-model thigh-holster! Click-enlarge it for all the great details.

Why this piece is awesome: There's already a lot of gorgeous art from Fantastic Beasts but this series which could easily be movie posters, is so lovely. The art has a nouveau feel to it and I love the looseness of the lines and color. Most of all though, I love the expressions on Jacob and Queenie's faces, such joy!

Why this piece is awesome: This is such a wonderful portrayal of Bilbo relaxing outside his door. Everything is so green and lush and Bilbo looks so content with his long pipe, sending smoke rings up into the air. It looks just the way I've always imagined the opening scene in the book.

Artist Website/Gallery: daekazu at deviantart
Why this piece is awesome: I had intended for all my recs this month to be Rey, but with the news of Carrie Fisher's passing, I knew I had to honor her. There have been dozens of tribute arts posted already, and this is one of my favorites. It's Leia as both princess and general, power and beauty together. The artist really captured Leia's determination and strength. From the young princess with a blaster to the elder general, she's always Leia.

Why this piece is awesome: I really like the starkness of the colors here - just black, white and red. Also the design, with them all enclosed in a lightbulb - both scary-claustrophobic and symbolic of the lights-as-signals theme.

Why this piece is awesome: The stars behind Rey form a wonderful, thematic backdrop for this more-stylized artwork.
