ratcreature: RatCreature begs: Please? (please?)
[personal profile] ratcreature
If you would like to volunteer for fanart reccing (please do!), just comment here with the name of the fandom you want to rec as well the month if you can't just take the next free slot. If you volunteer to rec fanart for a fandom, you agree to post at least four fanart recs during your month.

Once you commented to volunteer, a moderator will reply to confirm, and add you to the list of fandoms and volunteers that is also kept here to keep track, so everyone can see which fandoms have volunteers, and which don't.

You also have to join the community so that you can get posting access during your month. For information on how to format your recs, please take a look at the Intro Post, which has a convenient template.

ETA (Apr. 2016): I've cleaned up the list and removed the pre-2016 entries for more clarity, but left the fandoms that previously had reccers as subsection titles. Of course all fandoms are options for rec sets, not just those already listed.

Characters/Pairing/Other Subject: Robert Ford
Content Notes/Warnings: none
Medium: traditional art - watercolour finished with ink.
Artist on DW/LJ: n/a
Artist Website/Gallery: aquiles-soir on DA (aka Jack Flamel)
Why this piece is awesome: This is another great artwork by aquiles-soir, with Ford surrounded by the rather creepy blank faces of his androids. I love the colours, and the likeness and expression are excellent, really bringing out his shadowy complexity, and his ruthlessness. Love the little details too - his tie and cufflinks, and the chair's carving.

Medium: watercolours?
Artist on DW/LJ: n/a

Why this piece is awesome: I love the subtle colouring and unusual perspective of this work. It makes me feel like I'm sitting in the tree tops among the black butterflies looking down on Bilbo who's contemplating climbing up.

Fandom: Steven Universe
Characters/Pairing/Other Subject: Lapis Lazuli
Content Notes/Warnings: none
Medium: digital painting
Artist on DW/LJ: n/a
Artist Website/Gallery: [tumblr.com profile] thealeksdemon-art

Why this piece is awesome: This dark, moody portrait makes great use of a limited palette of blues and greens. Lapis's face and posture are very expressive. This character is dangerous when hurt, and you can really see that in her eyes. I love the nearly-symmetrical composition and the framing effect of the wings.

Why this piece is awesome: The color and design here is delicate and lovely. I was thrown at first by the characters in Hanbok but then I realized that it perfectly suits the universal connection the series tries to promote

Why this piece is awesome: Here's an adorable Ruby and Sapphire image for Valentine's Day. I love this style with the eyelashes and rosy cheeks and flowers — it reminds me of storybook illustrations from my childhood.

Characters/Pairing/Other Subject: Peridot and the corrupted Gem from "Kindergarten Kid"
Content Notes/Warnings: none
Medium: digital painting
Artist on DW/LJ: n/a
Artist Website/Gallery: dark-tarou on DeviantArt

Why this piece is awesome: Don't mess with Sheriff Peridot! She and her nemesis are both looking super fierce in this Old West-themed picture — though at the same time, I can't stop cooing over her adorably tiny cowboy boots. :) The muted color scheme adds to the Old West feel, and I love the use of light and shade.

Fandom: Steven Universe
Characters/Pairing/Other Subject: Steven and Pearl
Content Notes/Warnings: none
Medium: digital drawing
Artist on DW/LJ: n/a
Artist Website/Gallery: [tumblr.com profile] taikova

Why this piece is awesome: Here we have Steven and Pearl in the climactic scene of "Space Race." Their poses and facial expressions perfectly capture the urgency and desperation of the moment. I love that the sky takes up the entire top half of the image — it's big enough to absorb Pearl's longing gaze, but not so big that it takes too much attention away from the characters. The star lines create a great sense of agitated motion.

Why this piece is awesome: This is merely a doodle but it's adorable and captures so much about Lito and Hernando's chararcters and relationship. I love the way that this shows that art can be really basic and simple and still be very effective.

Why this piece is awesome: This is such a fun and charming depiction of Bilbo's front door and garden. I love the bright, clear colours and the small whimsical details. It would be a perfect frontispiece for an illustrated edition of the book.

Medium: stained glass
Artist on DW/LJ: n/a
Artist Website/Gallery: Leo de Wijs (designer); Stained Glass Geek (window maker)

Why this piece is awesome: It's a stained-glass window of Garnet, Ruby, and Sapphire. How could it NOT be awesome?!

Seriously, though, this is a gorgeous piece. Brilliant colors, great use of symmetry, some textural variety in the types of glass used. I love the tiny white diamond shapes scattered throughout the design like sparkles. There are also some process pictures showing how the window was made, from the original design sketch to the cutting of the glass to the finished product.

Content Notes/Warnings: None.
Medium: Traditional art, markers
Artist Website/Gallery: sunsetrising-art on deviantart
Why this piece is awesome: This is a striking half-face portrait that really emphasizes Jaylah's eyes and the strength and lines of her face. The use of copic markers softens up this semi-recreation of a promotional poster, almost turning it into a fashion illustration.

Fandom: Ms. Marvel
Characters/Pairing/Other Subject: Kamala Khan
Content Notes/Warnings: Contains an image of Donald Trump.
Medium: watercolor, I think
Artist on DW/LJ: n/a
Artist Website/Gallery: maryneart tag on Tumblr

Why this piece is awesome: When I saw this and realized we were on the last day of open reccing, I just had to post it. It's a timely and painful portrait of Kamala Khan reacting to the news of last weekend's U.S. immigration ban. (For those who don't follow Ms. Marvel: Kamala is both a superhero and an American Muslim teenager.) This picture highlights how, despite her powers, Kamala is first and foremost an ordinary person making her way in the world, which I think is one of the great strengths of the Ms. Marvel comics. Kamala's grief is palpable, made all the more so by the contrast with the patriotic, heroic images scattered around her room.
