Why this piece is awesome: I really like the strong, warm colours and the dramatic design with Temeraire poised on the battlements before flying. But what fascinates me most about this is that it brings home how weird the anatomy of dragons is - this type of dragon, anyway. This art, more than most, lets us see clearly that dragons are animals with two sets of front legs - the wings are clearly elongated limbs as in bats, and behind them are the forelegs. Some dragon art I've seen (not specific to any fandom I don't think) has only the wings and no forelegs, so the dragons walk on their elbows like pterodactyls. I think they're almost a bit humanoid and might tend to be more upright than 6-limbed dragons which tend to stand on 4 legs (here's an example). Six-limbed dragons as in Temeraire would move more elegantly on the ground, but they're less evolutionarily likely, in that we don't have any 6-limbed lizards, dinosaurs, birds or mammals (AFAIK anyway!). And of course this is fantasy, but still . . . interesting and in an artwork like this, it makes Temeraire more alien, I think.

Why this piece is awesome: This is such a cool and scary work. I love the creepy lighting and the glow of Sting and the eyes of Gollum.
