Why this piece is awesome: It's Walter the Chevron Guy! Before he was called Walter! I haven't found a lot of fanart of the supporting characters in SG-1, and I'm extra pleased that this one doesn't seem at all ironic -- it's a genuine celebration of the character, in heroic inspirational-poster style.

Why this piece is awesome: This painting of Teal'c in armor is the kind of work that would hang in a castle gallery, displaying the nobility and gravitas of a historical figure in rich ceremonial garb, and that's reinforced by its provenance (it's a piece of fanart painted by a professional to give to the actor, and the artist's notes say that he took some liberties with the armor, which seems delightfully like something a court portraitist would do). But what moves me about it is the weariness around his eyes. This is veteran Teal'c, all the stronger for the embattled life he's led, and the portrait is stronger for not prettifying that away.

Why this piece is awesome: It's a little odd to be reccing the first step in a work-in-progress, and the finished piece, Michael Shanks as Daniel, is a really nice portrait, emphasizing the planes and angles of the face, the sun wrinkles and frowny-thoughtful brow creases; it shows the character's indomitable sense of wonder, and the artist has captured the shape and expression of his eyes really well, which is not an easy thing. But I love Step1. The partial coloring/shading of the sketched-in outline gives the one finished eye an extra intensity, and makes the rest of him seem ethereal, as if he's not entirely in the physical world -- which seems to me a more interesting and accurate portrayal, whether it's because he's so much a creature of intellect, or because of his stints as an incorporeal being.

Why this piece is awesome: The soft expressiveness of the eyes in this strong-boned, powerful face is what's most striking to me here, and most gorgeously evocative of the character. I love the combination of scratchy brushstrokes with blended swirls of rich color and oily fresnel -- this is flesh-and-bone Teal'c, no uniform, no armor, and his skin and soul seem equally alive and touchable.

Why this piece is awesome: Another soft atmospheric painting of an event horizon shining in the darkness. This one's in a cave, with a small figure perhaps just finding the gate there, and warm light coming from down around the bend in the cavern beyond. I just love the mood of it -- the little figure reaching out, the event horizon's ethereal glow, the sense of great age and fresh discovery, the feeling of warm presence returning to a lonely place.

Why this piece is awesome: This seems to me a somber scene, but it's full of light -- from the event horizon, from discs (little ancillary gates?) on the temple pillars, from the bright diffused sunlight coming from beyond the pyramids outside. The environment is an important element and occupies most of the visual real estate, but the power of the figures' silent procession is its equal, and the bright gate is an arresting focal point. I can almost feel the soft texture of the stone, and the Egyptianesque detailing is subtle and lovely.

Why this piece is awesome: I'm struck by the lonesome mood in this picture of an armored Jaffa kneeling on a rise at nightfall in sight of an active gate, and by the point of view. Maybe because he's not aiming his armed staff weapon at the gate, and because he's apparently alone, he reads more as an honor guard to me, or a ronin, or the single warrior left behind to keep vigil? There are hints of story here, at any rate, and I love that. The muted shine of the armor, the event-horizon light on the grass, the wild stormy sky, and the smudgy rounded style all appeal to me too.

Why this piece is awesome: This drawing of Jack fishing through the stargate is funny and clever and peaceful all at the same time. It's a calming meditation that leaves me feeling pleasantly serene -- but it's also a delightful visual play on a bunch of tropes and conceits from the show. (Depending on how you interpret the pile of stuff Jack has hauled in, it can have a bit of a bite to it, too.) The soft sketchy strokes and gentle wash of muted colors are beautiful.

Why this piece is awesome: I absolutely love this piece. It's such a fabulous fusion - Gabe and Victoria make totally badass Goa'ulds - and the strong lines in combination with the dark colouring gives it a very creepy feel that fits the subject perfectly.

Why this piece is awesome: The Step Through comics ran on LJ from 2006 to 2008. The journals are gone, but happily eighteen of the comics are collected in this deviantArt gallery (and more of the artist's SG-1 work lives on in icons, including the one on this post). The style is adorable but not cloyingly cute, I think because of the relatively muted colors and heavy lines, and the sad eyes of even the smilingest characters. There's a handful of other Stargate art in another gallery, including Dance Daniel, a simple and infectiously gleeful wallpaper styled after Calvin & Hobbes.

Why this piece is awesome: The wash of blue color and ghostly highlights, Daniel intent on his laptop, the glow from the screen, Jack sprawled asleep next to him, the drapes and folds of sheet, the open-drawered nightstand just visible in the shadows, and the rumply-bedding comfortableness of it all.

Why this piece is awesome: A cartoon-style family portrait of SG-1 and SGA characters from all seasons (including villains!), affectionately caricatured and superhero-enhanced, assembled in the SGC's gateroom. The drawing is clever and assured, the colors are a feast for the eyes, and there are a lot of fun touches, like the Replicator on the wall, and the Asgard peering out from between Daniel and Teal'c. A comment from the artist on the wallpaper-size post lists all the characters.

Why this piece is awesome: I love Carter's expression and the way she's resting her chin on Jack's shoulder; the comfortable companionship is sweet and poignant. (The suggestion of a little chin crease is a nice touch.) The misty buff vignetting and leafy-floral texturing make the piece romantic and muted and sunny and moody all at the the same time, just right for a quiet portrait of shared sadness.

Why this piece is awesome: A really pretty space-art collage portrait of a computer-modeled Asgard ship. The soft grey texturing of the vessel looks touchably like sharkskin, giving an impression of marine life within the suffusion of luminous blues. Knotworky lines are a pleasantly delicate frame for the solidity of the ship and the stargate, and floaty Asgard computer-display text picks up the lighting effects to add depth. I don't know if the dash of bright-red dingbats and Ancient-style glyphs at the bottom right is a kind of artist's signature or more decoration, but it looks cool.

Why this piece is awesome: [personal profile] txduck makes gorgeous, painterly art out of screencaps and other sources with a technique featuring smudging and light effects that I have admired and envied for years. She frequently works at icon size, so her larger pieces are always a treat, and this one especially struck me. She blends the Sam and Jack from '2010' with a promo-image Stargate and a pastoral landscape of meadow/lake/hills, then works her magic on them to create a scene that wouldn't be out of place on the cover of a commercial romance novel. The way Sam is looking up at the gate and Jack is looking at Sam speaks volumes about both characters, the light on Sam's face is beautiful, and the artful three-tiered focus is really cool, from crisply rendered gate to dreamy-soft background with the just-right figures in between.

Why this piece is awesome: This is a rec for Leah Rosenthal's Stargate cartoons as a body of work, and they're all awesome. Why this piece is awesome: This portrait of the gate and the Ancient weapon at Dakara has an appealing softness achieved by overpainting, in Photoshop, a 3D scene modeled and rendered in Cinema 4D. I like the majesty and intricate detailing of the gate, the texture of the stone, the deserted silence of the buildings, the volumetric haze, the muted tones of mauve and slate, and the way the camera angle -- a little askew, a little uncomfortable --- makes the world feel appropriately strange and unearthly.
