Why this piece is awesome: This is a series of garden-themed pictures that so far includes Pearl, Amethyst, Steven, Peridot, Lapis, and Connie. I love the concept, the colors, and the wealth of detail in each of these — Lapis's picture even has water dripping out of the bottoms of the pots. There's some great characterization (Amethyst's version of a "garden" made me laugh). My favorite is Peridot's, which makes wonderful use of light and captures Peridot's nervousness about being able to take proper care of all these tiny Earth life forms.

Why this piece is awesome: This is a striking monochromatic portrait of early, villainous Peridot. I love the shading and the creepy hands of the Cluster in the background.

Why this piece is awesome: Steven's loneliness and fear are palpable here as he floats, stranded, in space. The starry backdrop is lovely and fits really well with the art style of the show.

Why this piece is awesome: Pearl and the Mystery Girl chat on the phone in a mostly still picture accented with small animated elements. I love the likenesses and bright colors, and the animation really kicks things up a notch, heightening the sense of connection and emotion.

Why this piece is awesome: This is an animation of Steven and Connie fusing into Stevonnie. It's sweet and joyful. I like the bounciness of their hair and the little detail of Steven's shoes getting left behind.

Why this piece is awesome: This picture does such a great job of capturing Pearl's determination through her face and posture as she squares off against an unseen opponent. The background landscape of smoke and debris and the diagonal streaks in the sky amp up the dramatic impact.

Why this piece is awesome: This is a colorful depiction of Peridot as Connie's math tutor. I love the characterization in this piece — it makes perfect sense that Connie would be eager to absorb alien knowledge (or eighth-grade math, as the case may be), and Peridot is in her element when she gets to be the technical expert.

Why this piece is awesome: [tumblr.com profile] mrdraklin starts with the familiar Art Deco representations of the Diamonds and brings them to life through animation. Each portrait blossoms out of nothingness and returns to nothingness again. I especially love the use of planetary orbits. Aside from the beauty of the unfolding geometry, there are wonderful little details that add characterization, like Pink's hand slipping away from the Earth and Yellow's ominous turn toward the viewer.

Why this piece is awesome: Here's a portrait of Our Hero to finish off the month. This piece was posted during Season 1, when Steven's life was a good deal simpler than it's since become. There's a hint of idyllic childhood in the quiet seaside setting, the cheeseburger backpack, and how small Steven looks next to his ukulele — but at the same time, his pose and the windblown landscape create a sense of standing guard and gazing out toward the future.

Why this piece is awesome: This is a terrific portrait of Amethyst. It feels very lifelike thanks to the shading, which lends a three-dimensional effect, and the warm, direct facial expression.

Why this piece is awesome: This dark, moody portrait makes great use of a limited palette of blues and greens. Lapis's face and posture are very expressive. This character is dangerous when hurt, and you can really see that in her eyes. I love the nearly-symmetrical composition and the framing effect of the wings.

Why this piece is awesome: Don't mess with Sheriff Peridot! She and her nemesis are both looking super fierce in this Old West-themed picture — though at the same time, I can't stop cooing over her adorably tiny cowboy boots. :) The muted color scheme adds to the Old West feel, and I love the use of light and shade.

Why this piece is awesome: Here we have Steven and Pearl in the climactic scene of "Space Race." Their poses and facial expressions perfectly capture the urgency and desperation of the moment. I love that the sky takes up the entire top half of the image — it's big enough to absorb Pearl's longing gaze, but not so big that it takes too much attention away from the characters. The star lines create a great sense of agitated motion.

Why this piece is awesome: It's a stained-glass window of Garnet, Ruby, and Sapphire. How could it NOT be awesome?!

Seriously, though, this is a gorgeous piece. Brilliant colors, great use of symmetry, some textural variety in the types of glass used. I love the tiny white diamond shapes scattered throughout the design like sparkles. There are also some process pictures showing how the window was made, from the original design sketch to the cutting of the glass to the finished product.

Why this piece is awesome: One of the commenters on DeviantArt said "this image is fearfully and wonderfully wrought," and that about sums it up. The perspective — looking straight into Alexandrite's fanged mouth, framed by her many hands — emphasizes the monstrous, unsettling qualities of this character. I also love the coloring, which is interestingly textured.
