Why this piece is awesome:  This is a really powerful drawing of one of the Thunderbirds/the Thunderbird god, in the midst of a lightning storm, as you'd expect. I love the movement and the life in it, and how the lightning's crackling in the god's hair and all through the bird's wings.

Why this piece is awesome: This a brilliant illustration of the book done for an art school final project. It's probably the closest version of Shadow to my head-canon, and I love the style and the coloring and shading. Really breathtaking work.

Why this piece is awesome: a nicely dramatic work with great use of light and dark, and contrasting colours. I think the figures might be slightly influenced by the movie's casting, but that may be my imagination - I prefer a more native American-looking Shadow, but I still like the overall effect here. Love the typical small town America background.

Why this piece is awesome: This artist does the most AMAZING ink-work and has a penchant for skewing the angle of scenes for added drama (there's a name for that; I forget it canted angles or the Dutch tilt - but that's in film). This illustration is one he did, then developed into a larger, slightly less dramatic work which was entered in The Book Show (I'll link to both). See the notes in his blog around the initial work, re who the characters are. On either work, if you R-click to open the work in a new tab you can then enlarge to see the inking detail - which is incredible.

Why this piece is awesome:  I'm pretty excited about reccing American Gods art this month, as there's some extraordinary work out there. I'm also keen to get in before the movie, when most artists have used their imaginations and the book to envisage characters. This is an amazing piece - the detail's great, and it does manage to convey the confusing and mind-blowing overlaying for Shadow of the gods' mundane human avatars and their godly forms. Click through a few times to enlarge it - it's absolutely worth it.
