Content Notes/Warnings: none
Medium: digital art
Artist on DW/LJ: not that I can find

Why this piece is awesome: Just a very nice portrait of a touseled Kili (one of the cute dwarves, but he's looking a bit more real here).

Characters/Pairing/Other Subject: Smaug (yes, more Smaug. I'm on a Smaug kick. He's awesome)
Content Notes/Warnings: none unless you're phobic about anything except reading being done to books
Medium: paper/card sculpture (traditional art)
Artist on DW/LJ: no, don't think so
Artist Website/Gallery: gallery at DA
Why this piece is awesome: Well, the SMAUG part of course, and this is just so clever and well made. Be sure to look at the various angles, especially the shots of where he emerges from the book.

Characters/Pairing/Other Subject: Lake town, and Smaug
Content Notes/Warnings: violent destructive imagery
Medium: digital painting.
Artist on DW/LJ: not as far as I can see. There's an art blog (similar content to DA) here

Why this piece is awesome: Another pro illustrator creating fanart, and a follow-up to my last entry. This artist's style is very different but it suits the violence of the scene, as opposed to the heavy "calm before the storm" controlled feel of the previous picture (here). I like that Smaug looks like a dinosaur, or a Kaiju, as he wreaks havoc. Click through to enlarge it.

Why this piece is awesome: The artist is a pro illustrator but this is fanart, and to a very high technical standard. It's an amazingly atmospheric painting - very detailed and I love the dark, spooky feel the lighting gives. I'm posting it as the initial part of a two-part set - the next one (here) is what happens when Smaug (did you see Smaug?) arrives. An object lesson in not building a wooden town near a dragon's lair. It pays to click through twice for maximum magnification.

Characters/Pairing/Other Subject: Gen - Gandalf and Bilbo
Content Notes/Warnings: extreme cuteness!
Medium: traditional art
Artist on DW/LJ: don't think so
Artist Website/Gallery: ThePyf on DA
Why this piece is awesome: Perfect pet choices for them both. Gandalf's all scruffy and rangy, and Bilbo's with the short little legs - and that  smile! Adorable - and nice artwork to boot, competent but with a folksy feel to it.
