I've given up on ever understanding the canon in its full scope, what with the different animated series, comics, toy lines, one movie, several reboots - I don't care, nobody should XD But it has some amazing elements to focus on and a certain "anything goes" attitude that makes it very refreshing. Alternate universes? Sure! Castle Grayskull has a resident ghost and a magic guardian who can turn into a bird? Why not! People fight with swords and lasers and ride robot horses? Absolutely! It's just really, really bonkers.
