ratcreature: RatCreature begs: Please? (please?)
[personal profile] ratcreature
If you would like to volunteer for fanart reccing (please do!), just comment here with the name of the fandom you want to rec as well the month if you can't just take the next free slot. If you volunteer to rec fanart for a fandom, you agree to post at least four fanart recs during your month.

Once you commented to volunteer, a moderator will reply to confirm, and add you to the list of fandoms and volunteers that is also kept here to keep track, so everyone can see which fandoms have volunteers, and which don't.

You also have to join the community so that you can get posting access during your month. For information on how to format your recs, please take a look at the Intro Post, which has a convenient template.

ETA (Jul. 2017): I've cleaned up the list and removed the pre-2017 entries for more clarity, but left the fandoms that previously had reccers as subsection titles. Of course all fandoms are options for rec sets, not just those already listed.

It's time for our regular reccer recruiting post, and to look ahead to the next month. So far we have NO volunteer reccers who have signed up for March.

So it would of course be awesome if we had some recs next month. There is still plenty of opportunity for you to jump in and volunteer to rec next month (or to convince your friends to do some reccing). And many cheers for all of our members who volunteer to rec, especially if you rec regularly. Your valiant repeat efforts keep the comm alive.

Looking even further ahead so far only ONE reccer has volunteered for April, so that month definitely still needs some love (and recs! *g*) too. So please consider reccing in a fandom of your choice, whether small or huge, and comment on the sign-up post and volunteer for March, April or even further ahead if you are so well organized, that you know your fannish interests and time commitments in advance. It's only four recs as a minimum, and you can rec any genre or rating. Or promote us to your friends or in your favorite communities so others do the work.

Open Rec Posting

The monthly open reccing period for all members starts now and lasts until the end of February. Since the general prompts don't seem to work as inspiration, I've decided to stop adding them, but to keep the open reccing period in case anyone wants to slip a rec in, without having to come up with three others for a fandom. However the recs do still have to conform to the usual rec format and follow the rules for what is allowed to be recced here.

(Comments here are disabled, because I want to bundle volunteering in the sign-up post so that nothing gets lost, and you can see the list of claimed slots there too.)

Why this piece is awesome: This is a lovely portrait of a thoughtful, somewhat sad Eden, and it has a WIP procedure study as well which is always interesting. The finished work is below, and the WIP post is here

Artist Website/Gallery: [deviantart.com profile] Rusembell / [facebook.com profile] rusembellart / [tumblr.com profile] rusembell
Why this piece is awesome: The fluidity of movement, the beautifully done hair, the pose, the hands, the color scheme, the cloudy background... There's just so much to see and like here. Besides, I'm very partial to watercolor, whether it's traditional or digital, and I think the artist did a great job with it. And then there's the fact that for some reason I feel that watercolor is the ideal media to portray a delicate-looking character like Mu.

Content Notes/Warnings: None
Medium: Digital
Artist on DW/LJ: N/A
Artist Website/Gallery: [deviantart.com profile] Dark-Vanessa (generally NSFW, although the specific piece I'm reccing here is definitely SFW)
Why this piece is awesome: The artist dresses and depicts Shaina in a way that's very similar to how Athena is usually portrayed, but with evident snake-related symbology added to her jewelry and her staff, which makes a significant difference. Although Shaina still also wears the original head piece from her Silver Cloth, here she looks like she either has become some sort of snake deity or is making the transition from Amazon to goddess. Both possibilities are awesome, and say a lot about the artist's creativity and passion for the character.

Why this piece is awesome: I love Teyla and wish there was a lot more art for her. This art portrays a happy, radiant Teyla, the colours pop, and her hair is so so well done. I also love the stained glass background.

Why this piece is awesome: Rachel starts off as a super villainous villain and quickly becomes one of the most complex and tragic clones. The artist takes something that has particular meaning to Rachel and turns it into a a lovely, stylized externalization of some of the reasons Rachel is as she is.

Characters/Pairing/Other Subject: Felix Dawkins
Content Notes/Warnings: none
Medium: digital
Artist on DW/LJ:n/a
Artist Website/Gallery: DA
Why this piece is awesome: Continuing my favorite clone/orphan black character list with Felix. The artist has a cartoony portrait style that I envy and does such a wonderful job of capturing the essence of Felix's conflicting experiences being the "brother sestra" of a growing number of clones, here with his almost melancholy expression and play of shadow and light from the clone genetic sequence.

Artist Website/Gallery: [twitter.com profile] Korin2br18 / [deviantart.com profile] Korin2b
Why this piece is awesome: The style resembles the classic StS anime so closely, that for a while I hesitated in reccing this fanart for fear that this was actually an screencap of a scene I'd somehow forgotten about. I think that says a lot about the artist's skill. Besides, although Ice Saints like Camus are naturaly resistant to low temperatures, it's always very nice to see them in winter-appropriate outfits, and this beautiful fanart gives us just that.

Why this piece is awesome: Venom fandom had the black and white stark contrast thing going for it, and this fandom has swathes of red. These watercolours are amazingly delicate and technically skilled, and I really like how the artist set them out in tumblr, showing us more of the image as we scroll down to the full piece. Also I love the blue shadow beneath her nose, echoing the blue of her eye.

Why this piece is awesome: Helena was my favorite clone and this piece vividly captures one of my favorite interactions, between Helena and her spirit guide/imaginary friend. Why this piece is awesome: This is a very traditional way to depict Saori in StS fandom (and in official promo images as well), but I love the artist's take on it. Saori's face is so cute here! Also, I love the coloring and the shining effects. And I'm glad that the artist decided to have Saori hold not only Nike (the golden staff) but also Athena's shield, as the latter isn't always included in pics like this. That was a nice touch.

Why this piece is awesome: This moment is the true beginning of the series and it's an unforgettable one. The artist does a lot of "cute" work, which makes this piece which captures the despair and hopelessness of this moment perfectly, even more powerful.

Why this piece is awesome: Orphan Black is a show in which the main characters are clones, all played by the same actress. This is a beautifully done montagesque piece that showcases Sarah and the other clones and lets each of their personalities bleed through with a loose, simple and sketchy style. Other than chibis this is probably my favorite kind of art.

Why this piece is awesome: I love the concept of Venom as a panther - it makes me think of daemon!AUs, which are always fun! And I have no idea what technique the artist used but it's super cool, with Venom sort of blending into the ground in a deliberately-letting-the-painting-technique-show-through kind of way. Their poses are also really cool and dynamic-feeling!

Content Notes/Warnings: a not-very-scary drawing of two zombies, otherwise just the dogs
Medium: traditional - probably fineliner with marker-colouring
Artist on DW/LJ: n/a
Artist Website/Gallery: Dontknowwhattodraw94 on DA
Why this piece is awesome: One of the brilliant details in the book is the use of trained dogs to seek out the remaining zombies in a widespread clean-up operation after the bulk of the main battles that won the war. The dogs had various roles - small, low-slung dogs could sneak through pipes and get into urban areas, and smaller scent hounds needed big dogs as escorts and protectors. Several are shown in this artwork, such as Maze, a dachshund cross from the book. I love the idea and was thrilled to find that Dontknowwhattodraw94 had been taken by the idea of these specialised dogs as well.

Why this piece is awesome: These three sketches are all delightful and do a great job of showcasing the character's (fanon) personalities - Eddie's general done-ness and exhaustion, and Venom's endless, excited enthusiasm. xD My favourite is the first one - I always love the trope of Venom Being Clothes, and this one is so adorable - Venom's delighted "I'm a hoodie!" and Eddie's indulgent "having fun?" are just delightful! So delightful! I also quite like how the creator chose to translate Venom's texture into their medium - something about it gives Venom really interesting depth! I also really like how Venom's teeth fan out around Eddie's face!
