Why this piece is awesome: Excellent expressive brushwork, and Matt looking typically whumped (seriously, he's about the most whumped character in all of television, surely!). I love the darkness and barely suggested city, and that Matt's likeness is perfect even though all we can see is his lower face. Very atmospheric!

Why this piece is awesome: This is so great! Matt and Luke having lunch together on a rooftop, chatting away and gesturing at their city. They are bros! Love the details (definitely click to make it bigger) like the cheese dripping from Matt's burger, and the napkin on his leg. They both just look really happy and relaxed.

Why this piece is awesome: Now for some individual portraits of the Defenders. This is a great portrait of Jessica - in her colour, of course. I like how she's hovering over the city, both protectively as a Defender, but also watchfully, hunting for the bad guys. Great likeness and details.

Why this piece is awesome: Reccing the Defenders this month, and I'm starting with an ensemble piece. They're each associated with a colour and that's shown here in a nicely subtle way, the drawing's good, the likenesses are reasonable and I really love how the artist's incorporated street maps of New York into the background of the four figures, given that it's the city they're associated with and largely based in. It's a good introduction to the fandom.

Why this piece is awesome: (Sneaking a last one in for August). Most of the footage and a lot of the art of Rocket is of him snarling, yelling and shooting very big guns. This is a nice change - a peaceful pic of Rocket chilling, just being a competent pilot. He looks content, and it was done after GotG2 so I guess he is, having found his family.  Definitely enlarge it for a closer look - the detail in his fur is great.

Why this piece is awesome:  Spoilery if you haven't seen these movies.
This is a lovely, somewhat sad picture of  Rocket caring for a newly-sprouted Groot, waiting for him to grow up. I love the softness and melancholy of the work, and that Groot seems to glow with light - but when you look at the pic again it's because Rocket is carefully holding his pot in the rays of light so he can get sustenance and develop.

Why this piece is awesome: The notes under the art are great - Zyden imagines this as how Rocket would train up baby Groot - starting with a water pistol. I love the energy in the picture and their fierce expressions, even in play.

Why this piece is awesome: Amazing, amazing artwork and likeness. This is supposed to be before they attached his arm, and we almost never get to see him like this, before he really became the Winter Soldier. He looks so terribly vulnerable - it's a heartrending piece. I don't usually rec more than one artwork by the same artist in a set, so I'll just point you to this follow-up piece by the same artist, for a happier Bucky, post-recovery. Also note the graffiti on his arm. :)

Why this piece is awesome: I love artworks of Steve as an artist, and this is excellent. Good likeness, and I love the colour contrast with the pic in grayscale and only the actual paint smears in colour. His eye's perfectly trained on us, so it seems like he's painting our portrait as we look at the art. Very nicely done.

Why this piece is awesome: This is an illustration for a story - sadly only in Russian. Wish I could read it as this is a delightful pic of a sad-looking and bruised post-serum Steve being comforted by 4 big fluffy white dogs, possibly Samoyeds if the comment below with this link is correct. Adorable floofs comforting Steve!

Why this piece is awesome: When I saw this and realized we were on the last day of open reccing, I just had to post it. It's a timely and painful portrait of Kamala Khan reacting to the news of last weekend's U.S. immigration ban. (For those who don't follow Ms. Marvel: Kamala is both a superhero and an American Muslim teenager.) This picture highlights how, despite her powers, Kamala is first and foremost an ordinary person making her way in the world, which I think is one of the great strengths of the Ms. Marvel comics. Kamala's grief is palpable, made all the more so by the contrast with the patriotic, heroic images scattered around her room.

Why this piece is awesome: It's Steve's birthday today, and this piece is pretty amusing. I love the light-hearted, idealistic, slice-o-life quality to the artwork. Brings to mind a Norman Rockwell painting. Also Sam is particularly well rendered. ^__^
