Why this piece is awesome: Gorgeous pastoral scene full of soft light and peaceful vibes. The flower behind Sam's ear is a cute touch, but also completely necessary in the way it draws the eye and prevents Sam from getting lost in the background.

Why this piece is awesome: A digital painting from a well-known screen shot of Galadriel looking emo and determined. Great likeness and details, and I like her expression - she's probably centuries old but I guess in elf terms she's still a teenager. :) Next time I'll rec another version of this screen shot, for contrast.

Why this piece is awesome: I had such a great time digging through my bookmarks, Tumblr, and Deviantart this month! I discovered so much mesmerizing artwork that I may have to sign up for another round of Tolkien reccing later this year. :D

But for the last piece of the month, to bookend my very first rec (a portrait of young Túrin and his mother), I've chosen an image from the end of Túrin's life. Here he lies unconscious in Nienor's arms, just as Glaurung tells her their true identities.

I love the scale of this composition: the dragon's massive head fills most of the frame, and one of his claws is half the size of an adult human. Yet at the same time, small details like the tenderness in the way Nienor is cradling Túrin's wounded hand and the horror in her eyes are clear to see.

Since I'm also a Star Wars fan, here's a cute little Black Foe to celebrate all the recent new content from D23! If you appreciate silly visual puns as much as I do, you'll enjoy this charming Dread Porgoth; note the Iron Crown.

In addition to her more traditional, dramatic work, alyruko creates a lot of fan comics like this one, which are pretty darn funny if you share her sense of humour. (Another personal favourite of mine is her take on "what if Huan were a corgi".)

Why this piece is awesome: This artist's work has a charming, fairytale style which reminds me of some of the Tolkien art from the 60s and early 70s. The sweeping lines of Boromir's standard and the intricate pattern of his armour are lovely, while the simple design of his face still conveys a great deal of character and resolve.

Why this piece is awesome: I've always loved the tale of the siege of Lórien and the destruction of Dol Guldur, brief and tucked away in the Appendices though it is. This wonderfully dynamic depiction of Galadriel as a luminous, armour-wearing figure at the centre of a dark whirlwind, with Nenya visible as a bright light on her hand, reminds the viewer that she's one of the mightiest of the Eldar remaining in Middle-Earth.

Why this piece is awesome: Another striking work employing high contrast, simple colours (black, grey, royal blue), and a clear silhouette. The sinuous lines, especially the strands of Lúthien's hair framing her, give it an Art Deco feeling without being a straight imitation of the period.
