Why this piece is awesome: This is a rendition of an early scene from the first book, Ancillary Justice. It really conveys the cold, the necessary solidity of the buildings and the warmth inside the bar. I also like the yak-thing sign with the alien writing.

Why this piece is awesome: The artwork isn't very large, but click on it to enlarge it a bit. I like this as it gets a number of details right - Anaander Mianaai's indeterminate gender, 'her' very dark skin (darker skin being higher status), the uniform with all the pins - thoroughly described in the books but hardly ever shown in art. Also, the gloves - remember that bare hands in the Radch are serious nudity so only primitive people go about bare-handed. Interesting.

Why this piece is awesome: I like the topic and the idea of One Esk Nineteen singing, and it's nicely done. As the artist says, the skin color could have been darker but it's fine, and has that androgynous look (albeit a bit manga-style) typical of Ancillary art. I like the delicacy of the fish and the watergrass.

Why this piece is awesome: I'm reccing Ancillary series art this month. I think there's often less art for book fandoms, as artists have fewer visual references as a starting point. There's very little out there for the Imperial Radch series yet. I'm interested in how close the artists stick to the very few clues from the books as to physical appearance of the characters. Many of course opt for androgynous characters as gender isn't important in the Radch, so often isn't specified. Note that I haven't read the last book yet (I'm doing a re-read) so you're safe with these recs if you haven't either.  This is a painting of Breq and Seivarden - it's accurate according to the art notes I've been making in my re-read. From my notes: "Seivarden: Very dark, male. Breq: Skin too dark to show a flush. Gender unclear."
Click on the image to enlarge it. I like the near-monochrome colours, the minimalist style, the accuracy to the books, and that they're not at all prettied-up.
