Content Notes/Warnings: none

Why this piece is awesome: I'm doing Picard this month. This drawing has great likenesses and a beautiful, restrained use of coloured pencils. I also like seeing the WIP stages from the drawing to the completed work.

Fandom: Star Trek Discovery
Characters: Philippa Georgiou
Content Notes/Warnings: Spoilers for episode 11 onwards
Medium: digital art
Artist Website/Gallery: [tumblr.com profile] thaya-wamani or [deviantart.com profile] thayawamani
Why this piece is awesome: This artist has done several portraits of Philippa, many of them striking. I chose this because I love how the colours were used, bold colours in very broad strokes and planes, except for the face and hair. She looks very strong and has an almost halo-like yellow around her head, which gives it an official state portrait vibe. The facial expression is very much self-satisfied.

Link: The Link goes to the Tumblr file because at least on my screen, the Tumblr entry was so large I could only see half of it. The art only seems to be on Tumblr (for now) and not in the deviantart gallery.

Why this piece is awesome: I love the concept and the colours in this portrait. Michael‘s face is made of varying shapes/planes which have been coloured, but there are no gradual shaded areas. The effect is very different and colours have been chosen well to represent highlights and shadows. The negative space is also used to great effect. All in all it has a very cool futuristic look about it.

Picking up my Star Trek Discovery recs for the rest of the month. I haven't introduced ALL the characters yet, but I'm going to throw out my self-imposed rule. I've been wanting to rec this piece almost since the beginning and now I'm just going to.

Fandom: Star Trek Discovery
Pairing: Hugh Culber/Paul Stamets
Warnings: There are spoilers for episode 12 in the tags on Tumblr
Medium: black and gold pens probably
Artist Website/Gallery: [tumblr.com profile] ainosgarden
Why this piece is awesome: I love Gustav Klimt's art, I love gold accents in paintings and I love the Culber/Stamets pairing. This piece combines all three. The pose is similar to the one of mother and child from "Die drei Lebensalter der Frau" (Klimt, 1905) and the whole piece has an art deco feel to it with all the plant and abstract patterns. It works with gold, white and black only and is really really tender. I am sighing over it again.

So here’s another awesome female character from Discovery: Admiral Katrina Cornwell, played by Jayne Brook. The fandom is creating more and more awesome art and I really have to keep myself in check to rec a work for every character first before branching out to all the other cool stuff I found.

Fandom: Star Trek Discovery
Character: Admiral Katrina Cornwell
Content Notes/Warnings: None
Medium: Digital art
Artist Website/Gallery: [tumblr.com profile] caressyouintodarkness
Why this piece is awesome: I really like the composition of the poster, the colourful warp signatures (?) connecting the three portraits of Cornwell. Also of course the awesome slogan “the future is feminist”. Putting her face into the Federation symbol in the middle is great too. Also now you can finally see the Discovery!
Link: here this was originallymade as a banner for a Katrina Cornwell/Jayne Brook fantumblr but the artist changed a couple of things and made a poster of it.

Here’s another one of the lovely Trek ladies (and I believe a much-loved fan favourite), Cadet Sylvia Tilly.

Fandom: Star Trek Discovery
Character: Cadet Sylvia Tilly
Content Notes/Warnings: None
Medium: Traditional art, coloured pencils
Artist on Tumblr: [tumblr.com profile] larkistin
Artist Website/Gallery: [deviantart.com profile] larkistin89
Why this piece is awesome: I love the colours in this piece, the mix of textures (rough on the uniform, smooth on skin) and of course Tilly’s expression. She is very much the wide-eyed enthusiastic cadet of her first episode here (though we see more complexity later in the show).

Fandom: Star Trek Discovery
Character: Captain Philippa Georgiou
Content Notes/Warnings: Artists’s comment underneath the art contains a major spoiler for episode 2
Medium: Digital art
Artist on Tumblr: aethira’s art tag
Artist Website/Gallery: [deviantart.com profile] SongAndStars has been deleted
Why this piece is awesome: This is another piece in a cartoon/animation style, with very soft colours and a lovely lighting effect (which again gives the impression of the character being beamed somewhere like in the Saru piece). Philippa is very well done here (though she looks a little bit too young) and this piece really gives the newly designed uniforms their place to shine.

Characters: Doctor Hugh Culber
Content Notes/Warnings: None
Medium: Digital art
Artist Website/Gallery: [deviantart.com profile] Dahkur
Why this piece is awesome: The artist has really captured the warmth and empathy of Culber here. He is portrayed in the series as one of the few genuinely stable, sensible and warm-hearted people on the ship, and as you can see his smile is to die for. The artist says this was a speedpainting, nevertheless the essence of Culber is captured very well. I’m loving the colours and highlights in his face too. Despite the blue colourscheme his smile makes this feel warm and inviting.

The next character from Discovery I'd like to introduce via art is a very cool alien: Saru.

Fandom: Star Trek Discovery
Character: Saru
Content Notes/Warnings: none
Medium: digital art
Artist on DW/LJ: -
Artist Website/Gallery: [deviantart.com profile] TheArtofGARD
Why this piece is awesome: I really love the colouring in this with strong vertical lines of colours going through the whole piece. It gives the impression of being beamed IMO - a cool sci-fi look. Saru is so well done here, with very nice lineart, and his expression is classic Saru, a little pensive, almost melancholy.

Since my brain sort of overloaded in January I forgot to post the rest of my recs in time. I've been allowed to go on in February, so expect more Star Trek Discovery recs!

Fandom: Star Trek Discovery
Characters: Ash Tyler
Content Notes/Warnings: None
Medium: digital art
Artist on Tumblr: [tumblr.com profile] ree-duh
Artist Website/Gallery: Fanart tag on Tumblr
Why this piece is awesome: I really really love the pose in this and the moon/planet in the background. The atmosphere is a little melancholy and just everything fits Ash's character and situation on the show.

Artist Website/Gallery: [tumblr.com profile] lornaka and [deviantart.com profile] lorna-ka. She also has a few speed paintings on Youtube: here.
Why this piece is awesome: This is an early Michael (recognizable by the Vulcanesque straight hairdo) drawn in a cartoon style. I love that we see her smiling here. The colours and lighting make this a beautiful piece. I'm imagining that this is set during episode one or even pre-series. (Just as an aside, go check out Lorna's Star Wars art too! She has a pin-up calendar. Just saying.)

There is so much cool art, but I'll try to first make a rec for each of the characters before I'm doubling up.

Fandom: Star Trek Discovery
Characters/Pairing/Other Subject: Captain Gabriel Lorca, a tribble

Artist Website/Gallery: [deviantart.com profile] larkistin89
Why this piece is awesome: There are a lot of serious or sexy Lorca portraits out there and I love that she chose a humourous situation.
