Why this piece is awesome: My love for these paintings cannot be textually rendered. There is (of course) an unpublished third piece, with Spike looking on while ballerina!Buffy and Angel dance the pas de deux from Swan Lake, but these two are my favourites anyway. The swanky clothes! The curl of steam! The hilariously placed transom! The dances represent chapters in Joss's narrative. The people in the background, with the notebooks and flashbulbs, are the members of the private discussion list, Tea at the Ford, doing what Buffy fans do best.

Why this piece is awesome: *hand on chin* Hem hem, yes, I detect something very Blue Period Picasso in this piece. Pretty darned appropriate for the episode, really. I like it when fan artists mess around with painterly styles other than "realistic" or "cartoony". Her Spike is a little too strong-featured, IMO, but I think Buffy's expression is simply wonderful. I like the way the composition makes the question clearly belong to both of them.

Why this piece is awesome: deviantART is awash with pencil copies of promo shots, ranging from the adorably lopsided to the impressive. This one is so lovely it transcends the genre. I'm making a set of this and the artist's other Dru piece—her vamp face, awful and stark as a gothic arch. The rest of Dr-Horrible's gallery is worth a peek, for portraits of the rest of the Buffy and Angel casts. Lorne is especially good.

Why this piece is awesome: Great composition and snappy, luscious colours—look how she's handled the vamp's black jacket, and the highlights on Buffy's pants. The concept, needless to say, rocks my socks. I love it when fandom reminds me (when t.v. does its level best to make me forget) that a woman's shape is not always a good indicator of her athleticism. I'm in love with those muscular arms.

Why this piece is awesome: Here, have some nice, fluffy little nightmares to kick off the new year! Aren't they huggable? Look at their eyebrows! I love the perky colours and the juuust slightly exaggerated style. I really love fanart (fanfic can do this, too) for SF/F sources that scoots on past the limitations of a live-action show's special effects budget, makes the monsters that much weirder, or the fight scene that much more dramatically superhero-ish. It's pretty subtle, here: smiles just a bit too wide for prosthetics, eyes just a bit too cavernous, but the effect is...of an artist taking joyful and smug advantage of her chosen medium.
