Why this piece is awesome: I am such a sucker for characters hugging, cuddling and puppy-piling on this show, so this, well, yeah. *melts* This fanart features an end-of-series group hug that's warm and sweet and heart-melty, but without being so sappy that it's completely OTT. I think my favorite bit is Katara with her hand over the scar on Zuko's chest, but they're all just so sweet, and them.

Why this piece is awesome: Most Avatar fanart tends to be cute, sweet, or quietly beautiful, often with a bit of an Eastern or anime flair. This, though ... This is a street-punk AU version of Zuko and Toph, basically modern-day with maybe just a bit of Mad Max thrown in. It's grungy, stylish, a little more grown up, and basically gorgeous, with attitude to spare and utterly kickass character designs.

(The artist notes that it's an unfinished WIP -- it was originally supposed to show his whole body -- but it doesn't look incomplete or anything; I think I actually like it better just as it is.)

Why this piece is awesome: DarkKenjie has so much gorgeous art that it's hard to pick just one (definitely look through the entire gallery while you're there!), but I decided to choose this one because there's not a whole lot of good Azula art out there, and I loved everything about this -- the colors and composition and lighting and details, and especially the look on her face, which promises infinite retribution as soon as she solves her little problem here.

Why this piece is awesome: For my inaugural rec for A:TLA, I figured I'd start with this gorgeous portrait of the main four kids in an animation-esque rendition of a Chinese landscape painting. The colors are subtle, the figure drawings delicate and lovely, and I love how the artist has blended the art style of the cartoon with the style of traditional East Asian landscape paintings to create something uniquely reflective of the Avatar world.
