Why this piece is awesome: Oop, got a bit distracted and behind! But I can hopefully squeeze a few more in even if I don't manage to get all the hermits. I couldn't miss Hypno, or this portrait that captures his personaliy (and his crop top with boob window) so well in one sideways glance.

Why this piece is awesome: Joe Hills decided to switch his skin to a juppet (that's a trademarked name for something that is part puppet, part Joe) this season, and it's been interesting to watch what fanartists do with the concept. (Weirdly, fanwriters don't seem to have been quite as excited about a character canonically being made of felt...) Anyway this one came very early in the season, an illustration of Joe riding a horse bareback when the world was new, but it's an impressive use of watercolor to capture the creepy-doll energy that Joe brings to the whole concept. (The False an especially Cleo in this are also very good.)

Why this piece is awesome: Welsknight can be hard to draw, because he never takes off his (shining) armor, but have a delightful little animation of Wels keeping his sword sharp. The sort of resigned determination shown here is a great summary of Wels with his neighbors this season, too.

Why this piece is awesome: DocM77 is one of the Hermits who engages most closely with his fans, and also the one who does the most incredibly ambitious projects of all kinds. At the end of last season he had a big blank wall that needed decorated and decided to ask his fans to contribute art that he could "paint" on the wall using Minecraft blocks as pixels. A large group of his most loyal fanartists came together and designed this massive, incredibly ambitious mural that covered everything he had accomplished in over a year, and it's gorgeous. (To see the finished Survival Minecraft version you can go to the Minecraft S9 map - but you might have to increase your render distance to see the whole thing at once! This is also one of several fanarts that were included in the S9 world that convinced Microsoft to rethink their content restrictions for their official Minecraft store, which is pretty amazing.)

Why this piece is awesome: Pearl is running the post office this season, and when she debuted her Post Office outfit, everybody fell in love, for good reason! This is a great extrapolation of the pixel design that's also really expressive & with perfect Pearl energy.

Why this piece is awesome: One of the amazing things about mcyt is how much emotion and acting they are able to convey despite having very limited body language options and fixed facial expressions that are only 8x8 pixels (it's also amazing how much distinct emotion those 8x8 pixel faces can convey.) Keralis has one of the most dramatic facial expressions of all, and it's very hard to do fanart that really captures him because of that, but this one does a really good job - and with ballpoint too!

Why this piece is awesome: Okay so. At the beginning of this season, Zedaph voluntarily limited some of his abilities in order to make the game more interesting. He signified this by covering himself in padlocks. This created an effect that was deeply ineffably yet cheerfully disconcerting, possibly the best summary of Zedaph, and this image captures that exactly.

Why this piece is awesome: This month on Tumblr is "Hermit-a-day May" so I am going to try to do a recs version of it here! Day 1 is VintageBeef, who spent much of last season sequestered away on a desert island working on his masterwork, but since he finished and emerged he became one of my favorites. This season, he has found himself somehow acting as the agent of a powerful Canadian fish mafia. I love this art because, while it's not much like everyday Beef, the expressiveness of it does a great job of capturing that exact feeling of made-man-in-over-his head. He's not the big boss, and he's not a capo, but he's not not a capo, and he's not sure he'll survive it but he's going to break as many legs as he needs to along the way. That might seem like a lot to capture in a simple cartoon drawing but this one does!
