Why this piece is awesome: I love the combination, in this piece, of formal, disciplined layout and spookily alien, futuristic subject. I love the stark black and white paired with all those luxurious swirls. I love the lines curling and bending around Illyria's body, like eddies in the air, or in time itself; Illyria, if you remember, starts out fluid in time (and the FX used to show her manipulation of time look a bit like these). Then there's the delicious irony of the lettering, "Festina lente" draped in more, but cobwebbier, time-lines, because all Illyria's vast plans, her temple and her army, are crumbled to dust before she is able to return for them.

As much as I can admire straight-up comics and realistic portraits (and I have some coming up!), what I really groove on is art with enough going on in the style and composition that I have meta about it to foist on people. (I'm sure you're shocked.)

Oh, yeah, never would have guessed.
