Why this piece is awesome:
While the Silmarillion says that Elwing "cast herself into the sea... but [the Silmaril] was not lost. For Ulmo bore up Elwing out of the waves..." this dreamy and haunting artwork depicts Uinen, a Maia of Elmo, as the one to save her instead.

The composition is weighted toward the bottom of the frame, creating a sense of sinking, and the beautiful drifting lines enhance the feeling of being underwater. Each time I look at it I notice a new subtle touch, like the seaweed in Uinen's hair, the way Elwing's necklace echoes Uinen's ornament, and the fishtail effect of her braid.
