Why this piece is awesome: I think the tiny figures are supposed to be Rose and Ten, but that doesn't actually matter to the picture. The star of the show is the magnificent alien landscape, with a tiny out-of-place police box perched in the rocky foreground.

Why this piece is awesome: This is a series of illustrations for a big bang story. I am particularly attracted to digital painting (paintover?) technique in the main subject in the first image. However, the thing that makes me come back to this post is the second image of the two boys watching fireworks in the backyard. The artist has built a world out of the details of photos and digital paint, bringing the text to life. More than just technical skill is shown. The lines of the middle-ground bring the focus to the boys’ heads, and then the raised arm leads the viewer’s eye up into the sky to create an effective composition. For me, it’s just the complete package for an illustration—a skilled memorable image, which also involves you in the story.

Why this piece is awesome: This is a beautiful, realistic-style portrait of Zuko and Mai in Fire Nation regalia. The artist has done a really amazing job of translating the characters' cartoon features to make them look like real-world people while still recognizably themselves, and the costume details are rich and lovely.
