Why this piece is awesome: Like all of X's art, this piece combines manipping and digital painting into an art form of extraordinary beauty and photorealism. X's pieces shimmer with light, making the computer screen the perfect mode for their presentation, and tell stories through close, detailed focus on one or two or three characters. Out of all her studies of this pairing -- many of them deliciously suggestive and intensely passionate -- this one is my favorite: Daniel reading, Jack playing with a paper airplane, both of them relaxed and happy, a charming, sap-free, perfectly in-character picture of intimacy that makes me smile every time I look at it.
