Why this piece is awesome: Art that can be viewed from two angles can be hit or miss for me, but this one's a hit. I love the use of colors - Sith red and Jedi blue. The flow of Rey's outfit feels very grounded to me, the tans and browns of solid earth anchoring the two; Kylo's star-speckled black evokes the hope of light in the darkness.

Why this piece is awesome: Winterofherdiscontent has a strong style that's both messy and elegant. Her use of colors is always striking, even in a muted palette. In this painting, Rey takes the role of Orpheus, pulling Kylo from the darkness to the light (side of the Force). Don't miss the Milennium Falcon at the top of the painting.

Why this piece is awesome: In The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren and Rey join forces in battle against the Praetorian Guards. This art takes a brief moment from that fight and reimagines it. I especially like how the artist has given different textures to the two lightsabers. And she didn't miss the all-important thigh grab, either. XD

Why this piece is awesome: The artist captioned this piece with lyrics:
I think of you, I haven’t slept
You’re always in my head

Which is highly appropriate for the Reylo ship. XD I love the colors in this piece that make it look like the beginnings of a sunset. The pose reminds me of a classic painting.

Why this piece is awesome: Elithien is one of the most popular Reylo artists on Tumblr, and there's a huge reason why. Her style is gorgeous, colors are highly saturated, details are ... very well detailed. XD And if you're looking for tragic romance, well. She displays that to the fullest. In this piece, the characters are almost silhouetted and the night sky is the primary visual emphasis, but the classic bridal pose is the star of the show.

Since I'm also a Star Wars fan, here's a cute little Black Foe to celebrate all the recent new content from D23! If you appreciate silly visual puns as much as I do, you'll enjoy this charming Dread Porgoth; note the Iron Crown.

In addition to her more traditional, dramatic work, alyruko creates a lot of fan comics like this one, which are pretty darn funny if you share her sense of humour. (Another personal favourite of mine is her take on "what if Huan were a corgi".)

Why this piece is awesome: A day late because I had the wrong link, but here is a xover fanart of Bucky with the Leia buns hairdo.

I really dig his SRS BIZNESS!face, his gorgeous new arm, and the color palette. Belated May the Fourth, y'all!

Why this piece is awesome: This is a Captain America/Star Wars: The Force Awakens crossover. The artist herself noted, "I kept thinking about Star Wars AU and had to add Bucky as a storm trooper, because guess who else broke their conditioning and escaped an evil organization?", which perfectly sums up why I think this piece works. I also love the casting of Steve as a Jedi, and Tony as a Resistance pilot.

Why this piece is awesome: I had intended for all my recs this month to be Rey, but with the news of Carrie Fisher's passing, I knew I had to honor her. There have been dozens of tribute arts posted already, and this is one of my favorites. It's Leia as both princess and general, power and beauty together. The artist really captured Leia's determination and strength. From the young princess with a blaster to the elder general, she's always Leia.

Why this piece is awesome: The stars behind Rey form a wonderful, thematic backdrop for this more-stylized artwork. I like the strong pose and of course the iconic triple bun, but what I like most about this is Rey's expression. The determination and ferocity in her eyes says this is a future leader here.

Why this piece is awesome: I tend to favorite just about anything that's fanart in a nouveau style, and this is no exception. The colors in this are wonderful - the sands and browns with the reminder of Jakku, and that touch of green is the perfect addition. I especially love the little Falcons forming the border behind Rey.

Why this piece is awesome: I love the little smile on Rey's face. I can imagine her humming to herself as she puts those iconic buns into Chewie's hair. His expression is a mixture of several different emotions, but I think "affectionate resignation" is about the right description. This is one time where the Wookiee doesn't get to win.

Why this piece is awesome: A very different take on Yoda, and I love it. In this he's ripped and feisty and it's a great reminder that before he was a chilled-out hermit he was a Jedi warrior. Sock it to those Sith, Yoda! (enlarge it to see every hair on his head)

Why this piece is awesome: Tentacles!! Fangs!! This is such a great dramatic piece, and the colours are gorgeous. I love the contrasting red glow, the cool blue-greens and the foreground purples, the perspective showing how trapped they are in the depths of the compactor, and the thick, muscular tentacles of the monster - especially the tentacle just starting to wrap around Chewy. A lot of this artist's work is professional, but this is one of a number of fanart pieces he's made. Enlarge for full scariness!

Why this piece is awesome: This is breathtaking photorealistic pencil work. It's taken from a photo reference (here - Daisy Ridley) and is almost a perfect representation. There's a WIP vid link at the DA post where you can see that yes, this absolutely is a drawing not a manip or something. You might say: what's the point? Why not just have the photo? I love more abstract and less directly respresentational art as well, but it's the extraordinary technical skill that gets me with this kind of work. Really, this is virtuoso photorealism. Amazing work - make sure to enlarge it.
(Also I was debating whether to include TFA works this month, but have decided to, as long as they're not spoilery. It is, of course, where a lot of the SW energy is right now.)

Why this piece is awesome: Oops, momentary lapse there with the Star Trek rec (more coffee needed!) - I'm actually supposed to be reccing Star Wars this month. It's like John and Rodney got in my brain and started arguing.
Anyway - to make up, this is a gorgeous piece with Han and Lando both young and looking very fit, probably up to no good at all. I love their expressions, Han's 'experimental' hair, and the warm colours - it's just a wonderful artwork.
